The place

Standard six-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Waioweka Conservation Area, Ōpōtiki district on the East Coast (North Island, New Zealand), at 220 metres elevation. Access via Wairata Road through private farmland (permission required, may be closed during lambing season); the route crosses the Wairata River. Tank water, covered deck with an open fireplace nearby. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZD 10/night adult, NZD 5 youth (ages 5-17), free under 5. No booking required, payment by Standard Hut Ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass. Track and hut maintained by the Nga Tapuwae o Taneatua Tramping Club.
