The place

Shelter ("útulňa") set at 1044 m in the Malá Fatra massif (Slovakia, Žilina district), on the blue-marked trail linking Višňové to the summit of Minčol. A small log cabin with a metal roof, with a seating area at the front for around 6 people. Located in the Krivánska Malá Fatra sector, the western part of Malá Fatra National Park (established in 1988), known for its biodiversity and preserved landscapes. Maintained by volunteers, unlocked and freely accessible to anyone needing makeshift shelter while hiking. A dedicated fund was set up to raise money after a fire previously destroyed the original cabin. Exceptional Slovak forest setting: ancient beech forests (UNESCO-listed since 2007 for some of the Carpathians' primeval forests), high-altitude pastures, Western Carpathian landscapes. Emblematic wildlife: brown bear (a sizeable population in Malá Fatra), grey wolf, Eurasian lynx, alpine chamois (population of around 200 individuals), and capercaillie.
