Колиба з пічкою
The place
A hut shelter ("колиба" — kolyba — the Hutsul term for a traditional shelter) set at 1,311 m in the Ukrainian Carpathians (Ivano-Frankivsk or Zakarpattia oblast, Gorgany or Chornohora area, coordinates 48.17 N, 24.22 E). Notable feature: fitted with a stove ("пічка" = pichka) — a valuable feature at Carpathian altitudes where nights stay cold even in summer. A striking location at the heart of the Ukrainian Eastern Carpathians, an area emblematic of Hutsul traditions (a Slavic/Ukrainian mountain people with preserved pastoral and craft traditions). Kolyby are the traditional shelters of Hutsul transhumant shepherds, built in wood or dry stone depending on the era. An exceptional Carpathian forest setting: ancient beech forests (UNESCO "Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe" 2007), fir stands, polonyny (characteristic high-altitude pastures), and Hutsul pastoral cultural landscapes. Emblematic wildlife: brown bear (a significant population in the Ukrainian Carpathians, ~3,000 individuals), grey wolf, Eurasian lynx, Carpathian chamois, capercaillie, golden eagle.
