Kōhanga Atawhai - Manson Nicholls Hut

The place

Serviced hut with 20 bunks in 2 dormitories in the Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve (West Coast), Lake Daniell area. The original building, a memorial constructed in 1976, honoured three trampers who died in a landslide in 1974. The current building was redesigned and rebuilt for families and school groups using sustainable construction techniques, completed in March 2020. Heating, cold water from a rainwater tank, a jetty on the lake, outdoor fireplaces, camping possible nearby. Access via a 3-hour walk from Marble Hill Campsite (5 km east of Springs Junction on SH7). Rates until 30 June 2026: adult NZ$25, youth NZ$12.50, child 0-4 free; camping NZ$10/5. Online booking required until 30 June 2027.
