Kiwi Saddle Hut

The place

Non-DOC hut, owned and managed by the Heretaunga Tramping Club since its 1987 rebuild, located at 1,170 m in the southern Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay). Facilities: closed wood burner, water tank, dry pit toilet. No official capacity published on the club's listing. Fees: no standard DOC tickets; a suggested donation of NZ$5 per night to be sent to the Heretaunga Tramping Club, by bank transfer or by post. Access from Cameron Carpark in 4 h, from Kiwi Mouth Hut in 2-3 h, alternatively via Studholme Saddle. Caution: the exposed high-altitude ridge is prone to sudden weather changes with intense cold, poor visibility, strong winds and possible snowfall.
