Kettutupa
The place
Wilderness hut ("kettutupa" = "fox cabin" in Finnish) located in the province of southern Finnish Lapland (GPS coordinates 65.61 N, 27.67 E — Kemihaara National Park area or thereabouts). A notable position in the boreal backcountry of northeastern Finland, a landscape of peat bogs ("aapa"), glacial lakes, boreal spruce and birch forests, and the low hills ("tunturi") characteristic of Kainuu / southeastern Lapland. Finland has 450 wilderness huts maintained by Metsähallitus (the Finnish forest administration) where lodging is free for one night — an exceptional network stemming from the concept of "Everyman's Right" (jokamiehenoikeus), which guarantees free access to nature. A remarkable setting typical of Kainuu: taiga, peat bogs frozen in winter (temperatures down to -30°C), vast wilderness home to moose, boreal lynx, wolverine (rare presence), brown bear (in Kainuu) and the eagle owl. An emergency stopover or free overnight stay in the Finnish backcountry tradition.
