The place

Standard hut with 8 bunks on a sleeping platform in Ruahine Forest Park (Manawatu/Whanganui), at 726 m. River water, wood stove for heating. No marked track serves the hut from the forest edge: 8 hours' walk from Mania Road to the Whanahuia Range, followed by off-track navigation along exposed ridges. Expert navigation skills essential (some sections lack markers). Strong winds frequent on exposed ridges. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass in the honesty box (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
