The place
Keinprechthütte: Between Tradition and Modernity The Keinprechthütte is a refuge run by the Vienna section of the Austrian Alpine Club. Located in the Schladminger Tauern in Styria, it is a major waypoint on the Zentralalpenweg. History In 1907, the Preintal Alpine Society had leased the "Herrenhäusl" at Zinkboden, known as the "old Keinbrechthütte". In 1912 it handed this property over to the German and Austrian Alpine Club. As the premises became too small for the growing number of visitors, the Vienna section of the DuOeAV acquired a lodging on the Zinkboden in 1919 from the mining company "AG Erzhütte", which was converted into the new Keinprechthütte. With fourteen sleeping places, the refuge was extended in 1979 with a dining room, washrooms and a dormitory, then in 1992 with a warden's room including a shower and a new cellar. During later works, the dormitory floor collapsed due to rotten foundation beams, doubling the renovation costs from 350,000 Austrian schillings to 700,000 Austrian schillings. In 2002, further works allowed for a new dormitory and four small rooms, as well as roof repairs, at a cost of about 1.5 million Austrian schillings (110,000 euros). A planned kitchen extension and the construction of a gas-bottle store required by the district authority had to be postponed. Currently (as of 2019) Erhard Fischbacher serves as hut warden. The winter room is fitted with an Alpine Club lock, accessible with an Alpine Club key. Getting there
Trois itinéraires principaux permettent de rejoindre la cabane, à 1872 mètres d'altitude : depuis Eschachalm, comptez environ deux heures et demie de marche en longeant d'abord un ruisseau jusqu'à un alpage, puis à travers la forêt en passant près de cascades ; depuis Hopfriesen, la montée prend environ trois heures ; depuis Mariapfarr, il faut compter environ cinq heures.
The setting
Nichée dans une combe des Schladminger Tauern, la cabane offre un accès à plusieurs sommets environnants. Le site se caractérise par de nombreux ruisseaux et cascades, ainsi que des alpages fleuris de rhododendrons des Alpes en saison.
A bit of history
Cette cabane occupe l'emplacement d'un ancien site minier où furent extraits des minerais de cobalt entre 1766 et 1818, puis du nickel à partir de 1832, exploitation arrêtée après la découverte de gisements bien plus importants en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Une première association loua un bâtiment sur place en 1907, avant qu'une section du club alpin austro-allemand n'y construise en 1919 la cabane actuelle, dotée à l'origine de quatorze couchages. Des agrandissements et rénovations se sont succédé en 1979, 1992 et 2002.
