The place

Free Metsähallitus päivätupa (day shelter) at the summit of Käyrästunturi (347 m), the only tunturi in the municipality of Rovaniemi, about 55 km north of the city. Formerly a log cabin used by forest fire lookout wardens, converted into a day shelter offering protection from wind and rain, with a fireplace, table and benches. Dry toilets and an outdoor fire pit nearby. No overnight stays. Free access, no booking required: maintenance road to a barrier 2.3 km from the summit, then a 2 km walk, or 2 km from the car park. No vehicle access on the private Lapintie road. Used year-round — hiking in summer, snowmobiling and skiing in winter, midnight sun in summer. Recent target of vandalism.
