Kaweka Flats Bivouac

The place

Basic bivouac managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in eastern Kaweka Forest Park, Hawke's Bay (North Island, New Zealand), at about 900 meters elevation. Built in 1963 by the New Zealand Forest Service in a clearing created by grazing between 1860-1900. About 1 h access via a formed track from the Makahu car park, through beech forest. Tent bivouac space around the shelter, water from the stream, dry toilets. Free accommodation. Suitable for a day trip or as the start of an extended route: 3 h to Middle Hill Hut, 2 h 30-3 h to Makahu Road; a historic iron whare is also accessible nearby. 4x4 recommended on park tracks, some access subject to conditions or closed for forestry operations.
