The place
Standard-category DOC six-bunk hut located at 112 m in Aorangi Forest Park (Wairarapa). Built in 1965 by the New Zealand Forest Service for pest control, originally intended for helicopter delivery but too heavy, and ultimately transported by the army. Cardboard-insulated walls, wood burner. Fee NZD 10 per adult per night, NZD 5 for ages 5-17, free below that, payable via standard tickets or annual Backcountry Hut Pass. No booking. Neighbouring huts: Pararaki (2-3 h) and Mangatoetoe (2.5-3.5 h) via the Aorangi Crossing.
