Kauritatahi Hut
The place
Basic hut at 783 m in the central part of the Kaimai-Mamaku Conservation Park (Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand — not Coromandel, as a default classification might suggest), about 1h30 south of the junction between the Thompsons Track and the North-South Track. Three bunks, free, no booking (first come, first served). Managed by the Thames Valley Deerstalkers Association. Marked access trail, reserved for experienced trampers: one section requires a rope to cross a sloping slab, and a metal ladder at the top adds a bit of spice to the adventure. Recently refurbished: new deck, roof and cladding. Exceptional view over Tauranga Harbour and the Waikato — considered one of the best hut views in the district.
Getting there
~1h30 from the junction of the Thompsons and North-South Tracks; rope on the technical section.
The setting
Kaimai-Mamaku CP, Bay of Plenty, view over Tauranga / Waikato.
