Kasseler Hütte
The place
Very busy DAV refuge at 2177 m (the DB lists 2274 m, to be double-checked) at the head of the Stilluptal, in the Zillertal Alps (Tyrol, Austria). 22 beds in rooms and 68 dormitory spots (sauna on site). Opened in 1927 and repeatedly extended and modernised since. A climbing garden is set up right next to the hut, developed by mountain guide Peter Habeler of Mayrhofen, with routes for all levels. Access in ~2-3 hours' walk through forest, meadows and rock from the Gasthaus Wasserfall (Mayrhofen → Stilluptal), via the Grüne Wand Hütte. A flagship stage of the Berliner Höhenweg, a full traverse of the massif. A base for mountaineers, high-altitude hikers, ski tourers and climbers.

A bit of history
Cette cabane a été bâtie en 1927 par la section Kassel du club alpin germano-autrichien sous le nom initial de Stillupphütte, en remplacement d'une cabane antérieure perdue pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Son premier gardien avait alors soixante-dix ans.
A word from the warden
Ce refuge appartient toujours à la section Kassel du club alpin allemand et reste gardé, généralement de mi-juin à fin septembre. Il dispose de vingt-quatre lits, soixante-douze places en dortoir et six places d'urgence.
