Kanohirua Hut

The place

Hut listed in Te Urewera, east coast (North Island, New Zealand), at 713 metres elevation. Site now managed by Te Uru Taumatua (operational entity of Ngāi Tūhoe); a decommissioning programme for 44 backcountry huts has been underway since 2022. Current status of Kanohirua Hut to be verified with Ngāi Tūhoe (+64 6 837 3803 / teureweravc@ngaituhoe.iwi.nz) — the hut may have been decommissioned. If closed, there are no toilets or water on site: travel self-sufficiently with a tent, sleeping bag; a distress beacon is strongly recommended (limited mobile coverage).
