The place
Unmanned refuge set at 686 m in the southern Vosges (Haut-Rhin, Mulhouse-Guebwiller-Lautenbach sector, Grand Est region). The place name "Kaltenbrunnen" means a "cold spring" in Alsatian Alemannic — a cold spring characteristic of the area. A notable spot on the fringe of the network of hut-refuges maintained by the Association des Amis des Vosges de Mulhouse (AAVM 68) and the Club Vosgien Mulhouse & Crêtes, which look after a rich network of refuges in the area (Refuge des Vosges-Trotters at Lautenbach-Zell, Chalet-Refuge AAVM at Markstein). A simple, freely accessible building, a rustic stopover for hikers looping through the Haut-Rhin Vosges. Typical Alsatian forest setting: beech-fir stands on the Alsatian slope, bocage meadows, and the cultural landscape of the nearby Alsace vineyards. Iconic wildlife: roe deer, wild boar, red squirrel, tawny owl, black woodpecker, red kite. Located on the edge of the Vosges ridge trail and the Alsace Wine Route.
