The place
Kaiauai Shelter is a DOC shelter in Egmont National Park (Taranaki, New Zealand), at around 672-735 m elevation, in the New Plymouth district. Basic shelter with no bunks, a waypoint on the Pouākai Circuit (a 2-3 day tramp offering spectacular views of Taranaki Maunga and the surrounding landscape). The trail climbs to Henry Peak (1220 m) before descending via the Kaiauai Track, passing the shelter, then crossing the footbridge over the Kai Auahi Stream.
