The place

Basic 2-bunk bivvy at 737 m in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park (South Marlborough, NZ). Free. Accessed via Blind Saddle Road from Kaikoura (25 km inland from SH1): locked gate, motorised access by arrangement with Colin Nimmo (Muzzle Station, +64 3 319 5791, muzzle@xtra.co.nz) with a maintenance fee; winter closures. No maintained DOC track: self-sufficient navigation with map/compass/GPS required. Dangerous river crossings not to be attempted in flood.
