Kaán Károly Kulcsosház
Szent György-hegyi turistaház
The place
A Hungarian keyed lodge set on the northeastern slope of the Szent György-hegy, in the hills above Lake Balaton (commune of Kisapáti). Built in 1934 by the Tapolca-Balaton section of the Magyar Kárpát Egyesület and inaugurated on 24 June of that year, the building first bore the name of the Minister of Agriculture Kálmán Darányi, before being renamed after the war for Károly Kaán, a forestry engineer and pioneer of nature conservation in Hungary. A remarkable position at the foot of the famous basalt organs of Szent György-hegy, a stop and waypoint on the fifth section of the National Blue Trail (Országos Kéktúra). Full renovation carried out by the Kisapáti municipality between 2020 and 2024 through the Kisfaludy programme (>68 million HUF). Reopened in 2025, with rooms bookable individually (for groups or solo travellers).
