Jumbo Hut

The place

A 20-bunk "serviced" DOC hut at 1,185 m in Tararua Forest Park (Holdsworth area, Wairarapa, NZ). Access is 5-6 hours from the Mt Holdsworth road end, or 2-4 hours from neighbouring huts (Atiwhakatu, Powell, Mid Waiohine, McGregor Bivvy). On the Mt Holdsworth-Jumbo circuit. Rates: adults NZ$25/night, youth NZ$12.50, under 5s free. Backcountry Hut Pass accepted. Bring firelighters (wood is often damp outside) and a stove (gas cookers sometimes fail). Online bookings available until June 2027; same-day bookings until 8 pm subject to availability.
