The place

Basic DOC canvas hut with 3 bunks at 730 m in the St James Conservation Area (Canterbury, NZ). Free. High-clearance 4x4 access by arrangement with gate code (Oct-May); road closed in winter. Past the "no vehicles beyond this point" marker beyond Charlies Saddle, about 2 hours 30 minutes off-track on foot. No maintained DOC track: map/compass/GPS required.
