Jauchen
The place
Unstaffed cabin set at 1172 m in the Hautes-Vosges (Haut-Rhin, Markstein / Storkenkopf area, Grand Est region). The place name "Jauchen" is typically Alsatian ("small liquid manure" or "damp place" according to the Alemannic dialect etymology). Located on the fringe of the Refuge du Storkenkopf (Captain Hisel, 1200 m) and the Markstein massif, on the high Vosges pastures. Basic free-access building, a rustic stopover for hikers on the Route des Crêtes and the Club Vosgien trails. High Vosges forest setting: beech-fir stands on the Alsatian slope, bilberry meadows, landscapes typical of the Vosges chaumes — high-altitude pastures created by medieval deforestation. Emblematic wildlife: chamois (reintroduced), capercaillie (last French population), black grouse, hazel grouse, peregrine falcon. Located on the fringe of the Ballons des Vosges regional nature park and the GR5 (long-distance trail crossing the Vosges from north to south).
