James Mackay Hut
The place
28-bunk DOC hut, Great Walk category, on the Heaphy Track, on the edge of the Mackay Downs in low forest (Kahurangi National Park, Buller / Nelson-Tasman). Distant views toward the Tasman Sea and the mouth of the Heaphy River, about 15 km to the west and 750 m lower. Facilities: gas stove, indoor sinks with running cold water, lighting, heating, individual rooms with bunks and mattresses, flush toilets; no shower. Bring cooking utensils and sleeping bags. Online booking required; rates NZ$30-44/night (residents) or NZ$30-66 (international) depending on season, half price ages 5-17, free under 5. Backcountry Hut Pass not accepted. A bit of history
Nommé en hommage à James Mackay, explorateur/fonctionnaire ayant tracé dès 1856-1861 une piste entre la haute Aorere et l'embouchure de la Heaphy River.
