Jam Hut

The place

DOC standard hut with 4 bunks in the Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park (south Marlborough), at 445 m. Backcountry, no DOC track: independent navigation (map, compass, GPS) essential. Access via Blind Saddle Road from Kaikoura, departing from the Kahutara River bridge (25 km south of Kaikoura on SH1). Locked gate restricts horse and vehicle access; motorised access by permission from Colin Nimmo, Muzzle Station (+64 3 319 5791), with a road-maintenance toll. Seasonal winter closures. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
