The place

12-bunk DOC hut at 1,349 m in Oteake Conservation Park (Otago, NZ), housed in a former railway station relocated to the Ida Valley. Fireplace, but few trees in the tussock landscape (bring firewood). Access requires an experienced 4x4 via Johnstone Creek Track (steep climbs up to 1,620 m) or Mount Buster Track (multiple river crossings). Contact the visitor centre before departure (track conditions vary with weather). Honesty box.
