Etchachan
The place
A stone bothy named after Dr A. G. Hutchison of Aberdeen, who died in a climbing accident in Pembrokeshire in 1949; his friends funded the construction of the shelter, opened in 1954 in Coire Etchachan, one of the most spectacular locations in the Cairngorms (Aberdeenshire), at about 762 m altitude. The building is panelled and insulated, fitted with a double-glazed window and a multi-fuel stove since its renovation in late 2012, which also added a small entrance porch for storing wet packs and jackets. Capacity of around nine sleeping places, managed by the Mountain Bothies Association. An ideal base for Coire Etchachan, Coire Sputan Dearg and the Loch Avon basin, below the cliffs of Creagan a Choire Etchachan.
Getting there
From Linn of Dee via Glen Lui, Derry Lodge and Glen Derry (~15 km, 5-6 h). Access to Cairngorm plateau routes and Loch Avon.
