Hurunui No 3 Hut

The place

Standard DOC hut with 16 bunks in Lake Sumner Forest Park (Canterbury), at 650 m. T-shaped, three-room structure. Built in 1939 as part of a Great Depression-era government programme, a witness to "the state's early involvement in recreation and tourism". Located on the former 1860s gold-miners' packhorse trail linking Canterbury to the West Coast. Dogs not allowed. No booking, payment by hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass (NZ$10/5 until 30 June 2026).
