Gursky's Hut

The place

An isolated hut on the northern foothills of the Pierre-Ier range (хребет Петра I) in the Muksu valley, Tajik Pamir, at 2,689 m. The place, sometimes called in Russian « Хижина Гурского » (Gurski's hut), is associated with the memory of a utopian community founded in the 1980s by a man named Gurski: one winter, a woman and two boys left behind died while trying to reach civilization. Today the hut serves as a staging point for expeditions crossing the Belkandou (3,339 m), Irget (4,400 m, 1B) and Tamasha (3,600 m) passes toward the « Поляна Москвина » base camp below Ismoili Somoni Peak. Access via the right bank of the Muksu along the gold-diggers' trail is objectively dangerous: constant rockfall, a discontinuous path, impassable in bad weather.
