Historic Price Flat Hut
The place
Basic four-bunk heritage hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Kokatahi and Whitcombe rivers area, West Coast (South Island, New Zealand), at 380 meters altitude. Located in a small clearing between two deep wooded gorges, 5 km from the Great Divide and 13 km from a major pass. Hand-framed timber cabin, corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. The oldest part probably erected in 1908; renovated in the late 1940s for deer control operations; concrete floor added in 1957; upgraded in 1983 by the New Zealand Forest Service. Faithfully preserved testimony of the deer-culler era. Free access, shelter on the route to the Whitcombe Pass.
