The place
Standard DOC hut with 4 bunks at 1,080 m in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, NZ). Built in 1960, upgraded in 1993. Water from a tank and a wood burner. High altitude: expect snow and heavy rainfall. Access via North Block Road, 8 km / 6 h via the Waipawa River and Smiths Stream Hut; or via Mill Road along the Tukituki River and off-track navigation. River crossings are dangerous in heavy rain. No booking required: Standard ticket (adults $10, children $5, under 4 free) or Backcountry Hut Pass. From Mill Road, crossing private property is prohibited: bring maps to stay on permitted routes.
