Hikurangi Hut on Mount Hikurangi (1752 m), Ruatoria/Te Puia Springs area (East Cape, Gisborne Tairāwhiti region, North Island, New Zealand), at 1167 m elevation, on the flank of Mount Hikurangi's summit. Continuous East Cape cluster (batches 240-343). Rustic community hut of Ngāti Porou (a people of the southeast North Island, 90,000, the 2nd largest iwi in NZ after Ngāpuhi), Hikurangi (the first mountain in the world to see the sun each day, being closest to the International Date Line, a sacred Māori site said to be the first land Māui landed on with the fishhook-North Island after fishing up the island from his waka canoe), in a zone of high-altitude Chionochloa tussock and Ngā Uepū Whitiwhia (7 massive 200-tonne granite sculptures depicting Māui's arrival at Te Ika-a-Māui, inaugurated for the millennium sunrise of 21 August 2000, East Cape being the first place in the world to see the dawn of the 21st century).
