Hideaway Hut
The place
Small historic hut at 892 m in the Ahuriri Conservation Park (Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand), likely dating from the 1890s. Originally built for the musterers of Benmore Station, a vast North Otago sheep run, then absorbed into Quailburn Station after subdivision in 1916. A distinctive feature of the place: the corrugated iron walls and roof carry the names and dates of musterers, the oldest dated 1895. The roof bears a historic inscription: "Lord Bledisloe, Wellington, May 6th 1931" (Bledisloe was Governor-General of New Zealand). Frame made of beech poles, often still with the bark on. 5 sleeping places. Access: turn off SH8 onto Birchwood Road, 17 km south of Omarama.
