Heaphy Hut
The place
Great Walk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) on the Heaphy Track in Kahurangi National Park, West Coast (Nelson/Tasman, Buller sector, South Island, New Zealand), at 21 metres of altitude at the mouth of the Heaphy River where it meets the sea (a spectacular interaction with incoming waves that halt the flow). The site is surrounded by limestone cliffs and nikau forest. 32 bunks in eight-bed rooms with mattresses. Facilities: gas cooking, running cold water, heating, flush toilets; no shower, bring your own cooking utensils and sleeping bags. Rates per person per night: October-April 44 NZD New Zealand adults / 66 NZD international, 22/33 NZD children 5-17 years; May-June and September 38 NZD adults, 19 NZD children; July-August 30 NZD adults, 15 NZD children; free under 5. Backcountry Hut Pass not accepted. Booking required via the DOC system.
