The place
DOC hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), at 1,000 m, built in 1961 and renovated in the early 90s. A 10-minute walk up a tributary of the Ngaawapurua (Harkness) Stream, with a covered veranda overlooking the valley. Wood stove, rainwater tank, food storage, long-drop toilet. Three access routes (Makahu Saddle Carpark 16 h, Boyd's Hut 6 h, Makino Road 14 h); helipad at 45 m. Payment by DOC hut tickets or Backcountry Hut Pass.
