Halti autiotupa
The place
Autiotupa (free wilderness hut) run by Metsähallitus in the Käsivarsi wilderness area (municipality of Enontekiö, Finnish Lapland), in a bare, rocky landscape. **Former border-guard cabin** on the north shore of a lake south of Mount Halti, about 1.5 km from the Kalottireitti trail. About 50 km on foot or ski from the village of Kilpisjärvi, with significant elevation change and rivers to ford. Building includes a dry toilet and woodshed; 200 m away, the old Halti autiotupa with its own woodshed and dry toilet. One of about 20 Metsähallitus huts in the Käsivarsi wilderness area.
A bit of history
Ancienne station de garde-frontière (rajavartioston tupa), sur la rive nord d'un lac au sud du mont Halti, à environ 1,5 km du sentier Kalottireitti. La zone frontalière résulte du traité de Strömstad (1751, frontière avec la Norvège) et de la paix de Fredrikshamn (1809, frontière avec la Suède).
