Halfway Hut
The place
Halfway Hut is a standard DOC hut with 12 bunks, at 339 m elevation in Fiordland National Park (Southland, NZ), on the Dusky Track. The walk in crosses the Hauroko and Gardner Burns; the hut sits in a small clearing. Like all Dusky Track huts, it is a small timber structure: communal bunks, wood stove, tables, tank water and dry composting toilets. An important stage on the challenging Dusky Track (84+ km, 8-10 days, from Lake Hauroko to Lake Manapouri). The section toward Lake Roe Hut is a difficult route (585 m elevation gain, 2.5-3 h). Note: the river has changed course near Halfway Hut.
