The place
Habert (former agricultural and pastoral establishment of the Carthusian monks) set at 1013 m in the municipality of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), at the heart of the Chartreuse massif — about 1.25 km southwest of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery. Building in excellent condition, now managed by the Chartreuse mountain guides. The many haberts of the Désert de Chartreuse provided the Carthusian monks with everything needed for their life of spiritual and material self-sufficiency. Notable location in the "Désert de Chartreuse" area — a classified sector of the Chartreuse regional nature park where the Carthusian order (founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno) has cultivated a monastic tradition of silence and isolation for nearly 1000 years. Exceptional forest setting: high-altitude beech-fir forests, limestone cliffs emblematic of the massif (Charmant Som 1867 m, Chamechaude 2082 m, Dent de Crolles 2062 m). Wildlife: chamois, roe deer, peregrine falcon, golden eagle. A major stop on the "Circuit des Cinq Haberts en Chartreuse" and the heritage routes of the Désert.
