Grwyne Fawr
The place
The smallest bothy of the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA), at 561 m, on the upper edge of the Grwyne Fawr Reservoir, in the heart of the Black Mountains (Brecon Beacons, Powys, Wales, United Kingdom). A former waterworks management building converted into a bothy. Very cramped, maximum capacity of 3 people. A rough, bare atmosphere: cold stone floor, a single small window for natural light, a sleeping mezzanine on a wooden platform under the rafters. No toilet — a spade for digging a latrine. Reached via about 4 km (2.5 miles) of walking up this isolated valley. Managed by the MBA, which maintains over 100 shelters across Britain with the agreement of the landowners.
