The place
Historic alpine-pasture inn set at 1535 m on the Grünten (the "Sentinel of the Allgäu", 1738 m), between Burgberg, Rettenberg, Sonthofen and Wertach (Allgäu Alps, Bavaria, Germany). Building constructed in 1854 by Carl Hirnbein, nicknamed the "Alpkönig" (Alp King), as a "tourist hotel" amid flowering alpine pastures and spruce forests — considered the first hotel in the Allgäu Alps. Today an authentic alpine-pasture inn with a sunny terrace and mountain-hut character. Catering service and 44 beds on offer. Cultural events organised in summer. Open from May to October, from 28 December to New Year, and until 8 January depending on weather and snow conditions. Standard access in about 2 hours from Burgberg or Rettenberg. Allgäu alpine setting: flowering pastures, fir forests, panoramic views over the Allgäu Alps range and the Iller plain. Iconic wildlife: chamois, marmot, golden eagle, peregrine falcon.
