Greg's Hut Bothy
The place
Free bothy at 718 m near the summit of Cross Fell (893 m), at the foot of the Pennine Way (North Pennines, Cumbria, England). The highest bothy in England. A small 19th-century stone cottage, originally a blacksmith's workshop and dormitory for the nearby lead miners. Renovated in 1968 as an open shelter in memory of John Gregory, who died in a mountaineering accident; his friends from the climbing club restored the ruined building and have maintained it ever since. Jointly maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) and the Greg's Hut Association (formally dissolved at its 2024 AGM, 50 years after opening). Major refurbishment by the MBA in 2022-2023, now in excellent condition. A waypoint for Pennine Way walkers (~600 visitors a year sign the logbook).
