Grassy Flat Hut

The place

Standard 10-bunk DOC hut in the Styx River valley on New Zealand's West Coast, 12 km upstream via a 4WD road starting from Kokatahi Road, 40 km from Hokitika. 45 m² building rebuilt in June 2005 with double glazing, north-facing windows toward the valley, a covered deck and an efficient wood burner. The site retains memories of the 1860s gold rush; a 1938 photograph shows the original corrugated-iron hut, replaced several times since. No booking required, pay by hut ticket or Backcountry Hut Pass in the honesty box on site.
