Gorton
The place
Mountain Bothies Association bothy set in the great emptiness between Loch Leven and Rannoch station, on one of the historically most isolated sheep farms in the southern Highlands. The original hamlet of Ghortain (Gorton) was inhabited until the 1950s before being abandoned ahead of the Second World War; it was converted into a single-room bothy by the MBA in the mid-1970s. Stone construction with a corrugated iron roof, reached about 5 miles from the main road north of Tyndrum, at 297 m altitude. A plaque inside tells the story of the place. Part of the "Watershed" series of bothies, alongside Ben Alder, Culra, Luib Chonnal, Kinbreack, Camban, Maol Bhuidhe and Knockdamph. Open to all, free.
Getting there
About 5 miles from the A82 north of Tyndrum. Also accessible from Rannoch station (West Highland Line) via the long peat-bog crossing.
