The place

Former musterers' hut on Goose Flat, on the edge of the Clarence River in Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park, southern Marlborough. The 2006 building was destroyed by a wildfire in January 2020; a new Goose Flat Hut was then swept away by another 300-hectare fire on 28 January 2021. A small pre-1927 building remains on site — one of the few historic huts in the valley — uninhabitable (earth floor, tiny window, no bunks), given a basic restoration in 2022. The site is now mostly used for a willow-side river bivouac, a fishing stopover, or boating.
