Gold Butte Lookout

The place

Former 14x14-foot fire lookout tower located on the summit of Gold Butte (4,618 feet, 1,408 m) in Willamette National Forest (Oregon, United States). Built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps; it also served as an aircraft observation post during World War II as part of the Aircraft Warning System. Now rented out as accommodation by Willamette National Forest. Capacity of 4 people: one single bed with mattress and 3 folding cots. Wood stove for heating; no water, no stove, no electricity. Bring water (for drinking, cooking, cleaning), bedding or sleeping bags, mattress pads, battery lanterns/flashlights, toilet paper, towels, dishware, a propane stove, a cooler and trash bags. Rate $80 USD/night. Accessible by car but with a final half-mile on foot over steep terrain. Panoramic views of the Cascade Range (Mt Hood, Three Sisters, Mt Jefferson).
