Ghost Lake Hut
The place
Hut on the Old Ghost Road at 1200 m, in the Mōkihinui River area on the West Coast (South Island, New Zealand). Breathtaking setting on the tussock tops of the Lyell Range. Owned and managed by the Mōkihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust — this hut runs its own booking system, and DOC Backcountry Hut Passes/Tickets are not accepted here. Capacity for 18 bunks, two summer sleepouts and a tent site; the sleepouts have no heating and are only available from September to May. Key leg: 12 km in 3-5 hours from Lyell Saddle Hut, including 6 km of steady climbing through cloud forest up to the tussock tops, then 6 km of near-flat walking across open ridgelines to Ghost Lake. The route follows the old forgotten track used by gold prospectors in the Buller region.
