Galiote
The place
Galiote ("small galley boat") on Anticosti Island, Port-Menier/Baie-Sainte-Claire area (northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Canada), at 3 m elevation, on the island's north coast. A new Quebec Anticosti cluster that appeared in batch 335. A traditional fish-warden's or trapper's cabin ("galiote" = a coastal sailing boat with Gallo-Romance origins), in an area of arctic-subarctic tundra and white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Anticosti, the deer-hunting capital: ~160,000 deer, 1,500 hunters per season, 15,000 killed per year), part of the heritage of the Meniers (French chocolate magnate Henri Menier, owner 1895-1926, whose 300 million ancestor deer made Anticosti a hunter's paradise; the island was bought by Quebec in 1974) and of the Innu (Ekuanitshit-Mingan).
