Galbraith Hut
The place
A historic hut located at about 850 m on the Maungaharuru Range, near Taraponui, in Hawke's Bay in the northeast of the North Island (New Zealand). A modest cabin on private land overlooking the Mohaka River valley and, beyond it, the Kaweka Ranges. The interior walls are still lined with fragments of newspapers from the 1950s and 1960s, and there is an unusual portrait of Princess Margaret. Unlike Department of Conservation huts, access requires the landowners' permission; the hut mainly serves as a base for local tramping clubs such as the Napier Tramping Club, who organise heritage trips there.
Getting there
On private land: landowner permission required. Access via farm tracks from the Taraponui area (Hawke's Bay).
