Frew Hut
The place
Standard 10-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the Kokatahi and Whitcombe rivers area, West Coast (South Island, New Zealand), at 259 meters altitude near Hokitika. Rates until June 30, 2026: NZD 10/night adult, NZD 5 youth (5-17 years), free under 5. No booking, payment via Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) deposited in the honesty box or via an annual Backcountry Hut Pass.
Getting there
Hut moderne isolé (anti-rongeurs, anti-moustiques, double vitrage). Piste taillée démarrant 500 m en aval du hut, remontant Frew Creek vers Hokitika/Mungo puis redescendant la Toaroha. Piste Frew Hut → Price Flat Hut : 8,4 km, ~5h.
A bit of history
Le hut actuel a été relocalisé/reconstruit 500 m en amont par rapport à l'ancien emplacement, jusqu'à la confluence avec Frew Creek. Kokatahi River – Whitcombe River area, West Coast, Nouvelle-Zélande.
