Freeman Burn Hut
The place
Historic hut at 194 m at the mouth of the Freeman Burn on the North Arm of Lake Manapouri, within Fiordland National Park (Southland, South Island, New Zealand). Built in the mid-1930s to accommodate trampers on the Bradshaw Sound - Lake Manapouri Track; Leslie Murrell had designed a loop between Bradshaw Sound and Lake Manapouri via the Camelot River and Freeman Burn. The hut has survived thanks to its proximity to a lake much used by kayakers and its sturdy construction. Recently restored by the Backcountry Trust (DOC). DOC "Standard" category hut with 10 bunks. Access by Manapouri Water Taxis, private boat or kayak. No booking required: buy a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) per night and deposit it in the honesty box.
