The place
Standard 10-bunk DOC hut in the Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence Conservation Park (southern Marlborough). Main access via Blind Saddle Road: from Kaikoura, 5 km south on SH1 to the Waiau/Mt Lyford turnoff, then 25 km inland to the Kahutara River bridge car park. Locked gate — motorized access via Colin Nimmo/Muzzle Station with a maintenance fee. Road closed in winter. No booking required, fees (until June 30, 2026) NZ$10/5 adult/youth via Standard Hut Ticket (honesty box) or Backcountry Hut Pass. Map NZTopo50 (E1633015, N5325529).
Getting there
Via Blind Saddle Road depuis Kaikoura (SH1 sud 5 km jusqu'à l'embranchement Waiau/Mt Lyford, puis 25 km jusqu'au parking du pont sur la Kahutara River). Accès motorisé nécessite un accord préalable avec Muzzle Station. Route fermée en hiver. Accessible aussi à pied depuis Warden Hut, 9 km via Seymour/Herring Stream.
