The place

Capacity: 39. Major climbing routes up l'Olan, whose spectacular NW face towers over the refuge (first ascent by Jean Couzy and René Desmaison, 3-5 August 1956). Refuge built in 1962. CAUTION: In winter and spring, access is HIGHLY EXPOSED TO AVALANCHES. The winter refuge is located 300 m to the east — it is owned by the FFCAM (like all CAF refuges in France) and managed by the Comité Départemental Isère (like all CAF refuges in Isère) — the new warden (hired this year) is Anouchka Hrdy. Opening dates depend on how regulations evolve. The winter refuge (closed during the staffed season) is the old refuge at 2194 m. In winter: enter through the window on the south side (not through the door!) — refuge capacity during staffed periods = 39 beds; unstaffed (winter) refuge = 12 beds — estimated climbing time (900 m of elevation gain) = more like 3 hours (which can be considerably longer in snowy conditions). Getting there

Point de départ : parking à l'entrée du village du Désert-en-Valjouffrey (1240 m). Durée : 3h30. Dénivelé : +950 m. Distance : 7,8 km. Sentier bien marqué, traverse le village, longe la Bonne jusqu'à une cascade, traverse un plateau herbeux, puis rive droite jusqu'à deux lacets finaux. Carte IGN 3336 ET. Itinéraire alternatif depuis la Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar (+1600/-450 m, 4h30, passages exposés, réservé aux randonneurs expérimentés).

The setting

Refuge situé dans le vallon de Valjouffrey (Parc National des Écrins), au bord d'un torrent, seul refuge de ce grand vallon. Marmottes présentes ; à proximité, la cascade de la Pisse. Aucun réseau téléphonique sur place.
